What is Balloon Sinuplasty System?

  • Balloon sinuplasty is a type of endoscopic nasal surgery.
  • It uses small balloon catheters that inflate to drain the large nasal sinuses.
  • The surgery is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration(FDA) in 2005.
  • Balloon sinuplasty, as well all sinuplasty surgeries, is considered extremely effective in reducing symptoms of rhinosinusitis.
  • Increasingly, balloon sinuplasty is being recognized and fully covered by medical insurance companies.

Application of Balloon Sinuplasty System

Balloon sinuplasty is typically used to treat cases of severe rhinosinusitis or sinus inflammation and blockage in the nose. The procedure was adapted from angioplasty, where balloon catheters are used to dilate damaged or congested blood vessels near the heart.

Character of Balloon Sinuplasty

  • Minimally invasive. This procedure is minimally invasive, involves no cutting or loss of nasal tissues or bone;
  • Shorter office, clinic, or hospital stay and much faster recovery time;
  • Lower risk of bleeding;
  • No intended damage or removal of sinus tissues, structures, mucous membranes, nasal bones or sinus cartilage.
  • Fewer required post-operative appointments or need to inspect sticches or sutures;
  • Reduced need for the use of operative and post-operative pain medications;
  • Reduced need for general anesthesia and lowered risk of adverse reaction to it;
  • Reduced risk of post-operative infection;
  • Reduced risk of unintentional tissue or structure damage;
  • Reduced risk of scarring and continued inflammation;

Work Principle

Balloon sinuplasty works by dilating the openings of some or all three of the major nasal sinuses. This enables them to be cleared and drained. Most people who need the surgery have a condition that leads to the sinus membranes becoming inflamed, preventing drainage of mucus, pus, and discharge, and causing congestion.

Over time, blocked and inflamed nasal passage can interfere with breathing, and lead to symptoms, such as a headache, jaw ache, and insomnia.

Balloon sinuplasty allows doctors to forcibly widen blocked nasal passages and flush out or remove congestion, often using a saline solution.

The Benefits

Safe and Effective
While use of any surgical instrument involves some risk, clinical research has indicated the Balloon Sinuplasty™ System to be safe and effective in improving symptoms of sinusitis.
Minimally Invasive
The technology uses small, soft, flexible devices that enter entirely through the nostrils. These devices gently open blocked sinus openings, and in many cases, without tissue or bone removal.
Minimal Bleeding
Because in many instances no tissue or bone is removed when using this technology, there may be little bleeding associated with the procedure.
Quick Recovery Time
While recovery time varies with each patient, many people can quickly return to normal activities.
Does Not Limit Treatment Options
This technology is an endoscopic tool and may be used with other medical therapies or sinus surgery techniques. It does not limit future treatment options if you have progressive disease.
